Tedeschi shares vision for combatting the opioid crisis in Barnstable

BARNSTABLE – Peter Tedeschi, former President and CEO of Tedeschi Food Shops and candidate to represent the 9th Congressional District of Massachusetts, concluded his “Focused on Our Future” rolling rally in Hyannis where he focused on an issue that has ravaged communities across the district – the opioid epidemic.

Peter Tedeschi discussed his family’s first-hand battles with the opioid crisis, including a nephew who lost his life to addiction and his sister who is a recovering addict.

Representative Will Crocker introduced Tedeschi, touting the work done by Governor Charlie Baker to address this crisis, and saying that, “Peter will be that connection from Governor Baker’s office and Beacon Hill to Washington, D.C.”

“The most impactful thing that [Governor Baker] has done is to destigmatize addiction, bringing a lot more people out of the shadows and willing to seek the help they need and deserve. The next step is to get more federal dollars invested in programs that work,” said Tedeschi. “I have heard it time and again – we need more beds and longer stays.”

Tedeschi also spoke on the need to ensure the next generation does not become entangled in the same or worse epidemic of opioid addiction through robust drug education, addiction prevention, and mental health counseling in our public schools.

Barnstable was the last of five stops Tedeschi made today on his “Focused on Our Future” tour through the 9th District.
